Unleashing intersectionality’s transformative power to disrupt workplace diversity and inclusion practices

Human Resources: In an interview with Health Industry Hub, Medicine Australia’s PAIG (Pharma Australia Inclusion Group) co-chairs delved into the concept of intersectionality. This thought-provoking podcast with Lee Davelaar, Strategic Policy Manager at Pfizer and Jenn Jones, Head of Human Resources, Oceania at Takeda explored the complexity of individuals within organisations and how various aspects of their identity can intersect to either create privilege or contribute to oppression.
In the context of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I), intersectionality plays a crucial role in recognising and addressing the unique challenges and experiences faced by individuals who belong to multiple marginalised or underrepresented groups. Lee and Jenn discussed the importance of recognising and empathising with the diverse experiences of colleagues, leading to a deeper understanding and fostering inclusivity.
Over the past year, PAIG has addressed crucial topics to drive meaningful conversations within the pharma industry. Lee shared some highlights from the previous sessions and shed light on the future focus areas.
The PAIG co-chairs shared the plans to address carer responsibility, acknowledging the challenges faced by the ‘sandwich generation’ and individuals juggling professional and personal responsibilities. Additionally, they intend to explore ableism, emphasising that disabilities, whether physical or neurodiverse, can be viewed as strengths and harnessed to contribute to organisational performance.
PAIG continues to gain momentum, with a vision to disrupt and continuously improve diversity and inclusion practices in the pharma industry. As Lee and Jenn prepare for the upcoming leader’s forum in May, they remain dedicated to shaping the next twelve months’ agenda based on member feedback and industry needs.
