‘Goodwill is embedded in our people and the DNA of our company culture,’ says Pfizer MD

Health Industry Hub | August 2, 2023 |

In an exciting start to Pfizer Australia’s Wellness Month for colleagues, the company has unveiled its annual Pfizer CARES (Community Collaboration and Responsible Environment and Economic Stewardship) CSR Report. The report proudly showcases Pfizer Australia’s ongoing dedication to making a difference in patients’ lives while upholding their core values of Courage, Equity, Excellence, and Joy.

The Pfizer CARES program stands out for its stakeholder-focused and impact-based approach, ensuring positive contributions to Patients, Colleagues, Community, and the Environment. Notably, the program is deeply aligned with the 17 United Nations Sustainability Goals, demonstrating Pfizer’s commitment to global sustainability.

Anne Harris, Pfizer Australia & New Zealand Managing Director, expressed the company’s recognition of the vital role that social and environmental factors play in determining health outcomes. “We have a significant role to play in contributing to the world around us, and the Pfizer CARES report is an important scorecard of our efforts locally,” said Ms Harris.

In 2022, more than 1 billion people worldwide received treatment with a Pfizer medicine, including vaccines and medications for cancer, inflammatory diseases, rare conditions, infections, and more. However, alongside these medical contributions, Pfizer colleagues demonstrated their goodwill through countless acts of service. Blood donations, food collections, fundraisers, and community engagement activities all reflect the deep sense of purpose and compassion ingrained in Pfizer’s culture.

Leigh Simmonds, Pfizer ANZ CSR Lead, emphasised the company’s dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, recognising that addressing global challenges like hunger, poverty, gender equality, and climate change is essential. Ms Simmonds also highlighted Pfizer’s support for organisations like Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood as crucial aspects of their CARES program.

Pfizer’s commitment to its employees was also showcased during Wellness Month, with the company prioritising emotional, physical, financial, social, and community wellbeing. Through diversity and inclusion groups, health and safety initiatives, and flexible working arrangements, Pfizer aims to create a supportive and inclusive workplace for its colleagues.

Notably, Pfizer was ranked first in Australia/New Zealand and overall second in Asia in its corporate reputation in PatientView’s ‘Corporate Reputation of Pharma’ survey of pharmaceutical companies last year.

The report highlights several significant achievements within the Pfizer CARES program across different areas:

Patients: Globally, over 1 billion people were treated with Pfizer medicines in 2022. Locally, Pfizer Australia conducted 74 clinical trials with 796 patient participants. Furthermore, colleagues actively engaged in the Red Cross Lifeblood initiative, contributing 246 blood donations from 90 Pfizer donors. Additionally, Pfizer provided more than 316 nights of accommodation for families in need and raised funds to secure an additional 700 nights for the Ronald McDonald House Charity. An impressive $700,000 was also donated to support patient groups.

Colleagues: Pfizer demonstrated its commitment to health equity by launching the REFLECT Reconciliation Action Plan, focusing on closing the gap in health outcomes for First Nations peoples. Colleagues actively participated in various diversity and inclusion activations, supporting National Volunteer Week, NAIDOC Week, International Women’s Day, International Day of People with Disability, and PRIDE Week.

Community: The Smith Family remains Pfizer’s Charity of Choice, with the sponsorship of 72 Learning For Life students, including 25 First Nations students. Pfizer colleagues contributed hundreds of hours to volunteering and supported various initiatives, including fundraising for Cancer Council Australia and food collections for Foodbank Australia. They also provided pro bono legal assistance to support cultural burning practices and aid Afghani people in bringing their family members to safety.

Environment: Pfizer acknowledges the profound impact of environmental health on human health. To demonstrate its commitment to sustainability, the company installed a new 477kW solar panel system at its Melbourne manufacturing site. Additionally, Pfizer actively participated in CO2 emissions offset programs, promoted recycling, and encouraged colleagues to volunteer for Clean Up Australia Day.
