Gilead and AstraZeneca earn recognition for LGBTQ workplace inclusion

Health Industry Hub | November 17, 2023 |

Human Resources: In a reaffirmation of its ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace, Gilead Sciences Australia has earned recognition from the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), achieving the Bronze Tier Status in the small employer category. This marks the sixth consecutive year that Gilead has received commendation from the AWEI, showcasing its unwavering dedication to LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion.

Amidst a total of 41,157 responses garnered by Pride in Diversity for this year’s AWEI survey, spanning 178 participating organisations, Gilead, AstraZeneca and Monash IVF Group emerged as Bronze Tier Employers (2023 – 2026).

An astounding 99% of Gilead Australia employees actively supported the notion that diversity and inclusion were pivotal to the company’s culture and acknowledged the genuine commitment of Gilead towards LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusion initiatives. Additionally, they personally championed Gilead’s efforts toward the inclusion of employees with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities.

Jaime McCoy, General Manager of Gilead Sciences Australia and New Zealand, expressed immense pride in the company’s recurring recognition, emphasising the authentic integration of diversity and inclusion within Gilead’s ethos.

“At Gilead, diversity and inclusion are not just a tick-a-box exercise, they are the cornerstones of our thriving, innovative, and progressive organization. This achievement reflects the dedication and passion of our employees, fostering an environment where every individual can bring their authentic selves to work,” Ms McCoy conveyed.

She also shared a poignant quote from an employee survey response, highlighting the lived values of diversity and inclusion embedded within the fabric of their daily operations rather than being mere symbolic gestures; ‘We actually live the values of diversity and inclusion every day in how we do business, not just write a policy document and get a rainbow sticker’.

Recognising the ongoing journey toward inclusivity, Ms McCoy asserted “While we celebrate this recognition, our commitment to fostering a workplace where every voice is valued and respected remains resolute. It is a testament to our dedication, and it aligns with our mission to contribute to an equitable and socially responsible community.”

The AWEI stands as a national benchmark for LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion, conducting the largest and sole national employee survey crafted to assess the overall impact of LGBTQ+ inclusion initiatives on organisational culture. This index not only drives best practices but also establishes a comparative benchmark for employers across diverse sectors in Australia.
