Boston Scientific clinches Great Place to Work title with sharp focus on culture, talent and innovation

Health Industry Hub | June 21, 2024 |

People & Culture: Boston Scientific has secured a Great Place To Work certification for Australia and New Zealand for the second consecutive year. This recognition underscores the company’s commitment to fostering a great workplace, as affirmed by 88% of its employees – a significant contrast to the 56% average satisfaction reported among employees at typical Australian companies.

Evelyn Kwek, Managing Director of Great Place To Work ASEAN and ANZ, said “When we deep dive into what makes employees experience ‘great’ – which has a high correlation to strong business performance – a common thread emerges: the critical role of leadership behaviour.”

Michael Baulch, Vice President & Managing Director of Boston Scientific ANZ, expressed pride in the company’s distinctive culture.

“We’re incredibly proud of our unique and differentiating culture at Boston Scientific and strongly believe it is the magic differentiator helping employees at all levels achieve high performance,” he noted. “We’re thrilled that the team in Australia and New Zealand has again been recognised for building a great place to work as together we pursue our mission to transform lives and improve the health of patients around the world.”

According to KPMG, the key workforce challenges in Australia for 2024 include the need to better attract and retain key talent amidst a slowing economy, addressing skills shortages and the need to prioritise gender equity, including the gender pay gap.

“Working for Boston Scientific is more than just a job. We have a clear and compelling purpose; talent that shares our purpose tends to be attracted to us and vice versa. That purpose is facilitated by our culture, which we have invested in for good reason.

“To quote our CEO speaking at our recent investor day: ‘There’s a lot to think about in your day job … but if you focus most on culture, talent and innovation and put your energy there, typically good things happen’,” Baulch told Health Industry Hub.

Furthermore, the company’s employee-led groups spearheads specific programs aimed at fostering community engagement and enhancing inclusivity within the company.

“We are active members of the communities we serve and, in Australia and New Zealand, have an employee led Diversity, Inclusion, Community, Equity & Environment (DICE) group. We also have Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) which create important opportunities for employees to meet, learn and grow outside their day-to-day jobs,” Baulch stated.

So, what makes a great workplace? According to Great Place To Work, “Great starts with leadership. Leaders shape experience. Experience shapes culture. Culture drives performance.”
