Boehringer Ingelheim sets sustainability benchmark in NZ

Health Industry Hub | January 16, 2025 |

Boehringer Ingelheim’s Auckland office has achieved a milestone in sustainability, earning the prestigious 6 Green Star Interiors certification from the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC).

This achievement is particularly noteworthy as Boehringer Ingelheim becomes the first pharmaceutical company in the country to receive this recognition. Globally, the Auckland office now joins an elite group of spaces awarded the distinguished 6 Star Green Star rating, showcasing the company’s dedication to sustainable excellence.

Xiomara Sandoval, Chief Financial Officer for Australia and New Zealand at Boehringer Ingelheim, reflected on the significance of this accomplishment, saying “This certification shows we’re leading the way in sustainable office design and creating a space that’s not only welcoming but also inspiring for all our wonderful colleagues in New Zealand.

“Achieving this certification showcases our global leadership in office design, providing a space that’s inspiring and welcoming for all our New Zealand colleagues. Thank you to the team for their hard work and dedication in gaining this certification.”

Andrew Eagles, Chief Executive of NZGBC, applauded the achievement, saying “We love to see businesses taking up a sustainable, healthy approach to their office fitouts, and it’s exceptional to see the efforts Boehringer Ingelheim have made towards achieving the highest Green Star rating possible.

He further added, “Fewer than 10 New Zealand offices have achieved a 6 Star Green Star rating for their fitout, and this is the country’s first under the most recent version of the Green Star Interiors certification. A huge congratulations to all involved in creating a more efficient, sustainable space for staff to excel in.”

Boehringer’s 6 Star Green Star certification celebrates several standout features, including ergonomic, fully adjustable workstation furniture, layouts promoting health and environmental consciousness, and superior indoor air quality delivering twice the fresh air required by building codes. Advanced lighting systems with natural daylight sensors further enhance energy efficiency, while low-pollutant materials emphasise sustainability throughout the office design.

The Green Star system evaluates projects across 30 sustainability categories, providing an independent assessment of how buildings meet benchmark standards for low-carbon, sustainable design and construction.
