Roche partners with Rural Doctors Foundation to deliver innovative care in remote communities

Health Industry Hub | June 30, 2023 |

Pharma News: In an exciting development for healthcare in rural and remote areas of Australia, Roche Australia has announced a new partnership with the Rural Doctors Foundation (RDF), a national rural health charity. The collaboration between these two organisations aims to tackle the unique healthcare challenges faced by rural communities and enhance equity of access to quality care for patients residing in these regions.

Rural areas often struggle with limited access to healthcare services, and this partnership seeks to make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and healthcare professionals residing in remote parts of the country. Roche Australia will provide support to the Foundation, enabling them to address the pressing healthcare needs of rural communities effectively.

One of the significant hurdles faced by rural doctors, who are at the forefront of healthcare provision in these areas, is accessing healthcare for themselves. It is not uncommon for rural GPs to travel over 300 kilometers to receive the care they need. The lack of independent and confidential healthcare options poses a barrier to self-care, as these doctors often find themselves faced with the difficult choice of seeking help from a colleague or traveling long distances to receive the same level of care they provide to their own patients.

Stuart Knight, the General Manager of Roche Australia, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasising the company’s commitment to improving healthcare outcomes and ensuring equitable access for all Australians. Recognising the significant challenges faced by rural communities, Roche Australia aims to create sustainable solutions through this collaboration with the Rural Doctors Foundation. Together, they intend to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals living in remote areas.

The Rural Doctors Foundation has been tirelessly working to address healthcare disparities faced by rural populations. Through their programs, the Foundation strives to improve the availability and delivery of medical services, support education and training opportunities for rural health professionals, and advocate for policy changes that positively impact rural healthcare. Partnering with Roche Australia will further strengthen their efforts and amplify their impact in remote communities.

Fran Avon, the Chief Executive Officer at the Rural Doctors Foundation, expressed excitement about the collaboration, acknowledging Roche Australia’s dedication to improving patient outcomes and driving innovation in healthcare. Avon sees this partnership as an incredible opportunity to address the unique challenges faced by rural communities, particularly the limited access to healthcare practitioners. The aim is to increase access to healthcare services and improve health outcomes for the rural health workforce, which plays a vital role in these communities.

Through this partnership, Roche Australia and the Rural Doctors Foundation aspire to deliver an innovative primary healthcare model that will sustainably increase access to GPs for healthcare professionals in remote areas. This approach aims to empower rural communities and alleviate the pressure on the existing rural GP workforce. By leveraging their collective expertise and resources, both organisations seek to create a lasting impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals living in these underserved regions.
