Omico expands revenue model with launch of precision oncology data offering

Omico is expanding its contribution to Australia’s precision oncology ecosystem with the launch of a new real-world data (RWD) offering, providing researchers, healthcare organisations and industry partners with access to one of the nation’s largest and most comprehensive precision oncology datasets.

Built from Australia’s largest prospectively consented precision oncology dataset, comprising more than 23,000 patients, the initiative establishes a new revenue stream for Omico while enabling the use of deidentified clinical, genomic and outcomes data to support cancer research, evidence generation, clinical decision-making and health system planning.

Developed through Omico’s national precision oncology programs, CaSP and MoST, the dataset is set to grow significantly under the government’s recent 2026–27 Federal Budget investment, which extends support for patient access through to 2028/29.

“Diversifying Omico’s revenue streams is an important part of ensuring the organisation remains sustainable and able to continue scaling access to precision oncology for Australians who need it most,” said Omico’s CEO Ian Black said, “Omico has always operated with a unique funding model, combining both public and private investments. While we are grateful for the recent commitment from the Australian Government, continuing to diversify revenue streams remains critically important to sustaining the trajectory of our programs. Funding generated through these real-world data collaborations will help us continue expanding access to precision oncology and reinvest in the long-term impact of our programs.”

Women account for 52% of participants within the dataset, while 31% of patient records originate from outside major metropolitan centres. The three most represented tumour types are colorectal (bowel) cancer, lung cancer and pancreatic cancer. Treatment access data shows that 74% of patients received therapies through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), while 18% accessed treatment through clinical trials, 5% through compassionate access programs and 4% privately funded the therapies.

Professor David Thomas, Omico Founder and Chief Science and Strategy Officer, said “As cancer care becomes increasingly biomarker-driven, the ability to generate meaningful evidence in smaller patient populations becomes more challenging and more important. Precision oncology is evolving in real time, and to guide it responsibly we need data that reflects diverse patient populations and real clinical care. Our real-world data can add significant value to advancing precision oncology research, development, clinical decision-making and health system planning.”

Participants in Omico’s precision oncology programs have consented to the use of their data in a deidentified and aggregated manner to support research and future advances in cancer care.
