Novartis Country President talks essentials in shaping the future of health policy: Reimagining Healthcare senior leadership series
In this episode of the Reimagining Healthcare senior leadership series, Matt Zeller, Country President of Novartis ANZ, explores how health policy is set to transform over the next 10-15 years to better serve consumers and wider stakeholders, including industry.
Prioritising “prevention and healthcare as an investment” are essential in paving the way for Australians to lead “longer, more productive and healthier lives”, according to Zeller.
Reflecting on his extensive international experience, Zeller highlighted the significant challenges and roadblocks that hinder the development of a long-term strategic vision for health policy.
“There are a massive amount of competing priorities, and so everybody has their entrenched positions… It begs the question, what are we solving for?” he questioned.
Zeller emphasised the crucial role of industry in shaping the conversation around local health policy to address the barriers that still exist.
“We sometimes don’t do a good job as an industry of aligning what we want. We have a role in creating data and metrics that can bring sense to the conversation, and we need to add more uniformity and pragmatism to the discussion,” he highlighted.
Drawing on lessons from other countries, including Estonia, Germany, Hungary and the UK, Zeller identified best practices and strategies that Australia could adopt to enhance its health policy framework.
In conclusion, Zeller outlined key short-term actions, including the need for a “well-executed” response to the HTA review from the government and the appetite for “experimentation” that are essential for steering towards the reimagined future of health policy.
