Major IVF provider confirms cyberattack has exposed sensitive patient data

Health Industry Hub | February 25, 2025 |

One of Australia’s largest fertility providers has confirmed that cybercriminals accessed its systems and stole patient data, raising alarm across the industry.

Genea, along with Monash IVF and Virtus, dominates over 80% of the country’s fertility services sector. This breach could have far-reaching consequences, affecting a significant number of Australians undergoing fertility treatments.

Last week, Genea alerted customers via email, stating it was “urgently investigating a cyber incident after identifying suspicious activity on our network.”

In an update, the company has now revealed that its investigation confirmed unauthorised access to its patient management system, with personal data stolen by threat actors.

“We have notified the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and the Australian Cyber Security Centre of the incident. We are meeting with the National Office of Cyber Security, the Australian Cyber Security Centre and other government departments to discuss the incident with them,” Genea said.

According to the latest data from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), Australia recorded 527 data breach notifications in the first half of 2024 – the highest in 3.5 years and a 9% increase from the previous six months.

The healthcare sector remains the most vulnerable, accounting for 19% of breaches, second only to the federal government (12%). Criminal attacks were responsible for a staggering 67% of breaches, while human error contributed to 30%.

Major cybersecurity incidents involving MediSecure prescription delivery service, Medibank and Optus have prompted regulatory reforms. Last year, the federal government passed landmark cybersecurity legislation, introducing mandatory ransomware reporting and enhanced protections for businesses that cooperate with authorities in the aftermath of an attack.

For Genea patients, the breach has also sparked concerns about potential disruptions to their fertility treatments, which are both costly and time-sensitive.

IVF treatment at Genea can cost between $12,395 and $13,095 per cycle, depending on the type of treatment. The timing of medications, tests, and procedures is critical, leaving some patients frustrated and anxious over communication delays.

“Hey, I’ve tried contacting my clinic in Orange via the email above, and they still haven’t got back to me. My medication runs out on Thursday – sort of a desperate situation,” one Genea patient wrote on social media.

Another patient expressed similar frustration, saying “App still down. Need my blood slip. No answer on emails. Hope this delay doesn’t affect my treatment plan.”
