Keeping pressure as industry awaits government response to HTA Review report
Pharma News: In a bid to keep the momentum, Medicines Australia will host an HTA focused Policy Roundtable with industry and diverse stakeholder representatives this week as part of ongoing activities to drive stakeholders HTA priorities and prepare for implementation of bold HTA reform.
The discussion will focus on three topics drawn from the HTA Options Paper that attracted mixed support in the second consultation of the HTA Review: a qualitative value framework, a proposed bridging fund and the use of managed entry.
Despite the closure of the HTA Review consultation 2 nearly five month ago, stakeholders are still awaiting the Department of Health’s publication of the submissions online.
When probed on the lack of transparency, Health Industry Hub was told by the Department of Health, “Submissions to the HTA review will be published asap by the Department in accordance privacy and accessibility requirements. The Department is working towards completing this work by the end of June and arranging for its publication in July.”
Medicines Australia CEO Liz de Somer said maintaining momentum is important while Government considers the recommendations in the HTA Review Report.
“This is the first step in informing the co-design work that will be critical to ensuring reforms address the current challenges. This work needs to start now so we continue the momentum following a number of reviews since 2021, while the Government considers the HTA recommendations and works through its processes.”
“Now is an opportune time for stakeholders to work together to commence co-design on options where we know there is stakeholder alignment and significant need.”
Pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer and GSK have already voiced their concerns regarding the lack of alignment of proposed options in consultation 2 with the overarching goals of the HTA Review.
“There is no question that HTA reform is needed – the current system is 30 years old and struggling to keep pace with new technologies. Patients know this, clinicians know this, industry knows this, and the Minister knows it,” de Somer added.
“The roadmap of reforms that Medicines Australia has outlined makes the case for implementing much needed reforms using a phased approach over three years.
“As an industry, we must stay focused and continue leading the way, ensuring all stakeholders can contribute and remain engaged throughout the journey. These are early days and it’s a long road ahead.”
Approximately 30 people will be attending the full day event on Friday, including representatives from patient groups, industry, clinicians, academics and peak bodies who have been active throughout the HTA Review.
The outcomes from the roundtable will be shared with Government and stakeholders.
