How Albanese and Dutton’s clashing narratives could influence voter decisions tomorrow

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has peeled back the emotional veneer of political leadership, revealing the psychological battleground behind the final debate between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton on April 16th. In a twist to election analysis, researchers used AI to decode not just what was said – but how it felt.

Stephan Ludwig, Professor of Marketing at Monash Business School, highlighted the stark emotional contrast between the candidates. Opposition leader Dutton’s emotional expressions leaned heavily on defensive emotions, including fear, shame and worry, while Prime Minister Albanese’s performance reflected significantly higher levels of optimism, with appeals to commitment.

“Mr Dutton’s expressions of anger (31%), discontent (38%) and worry (41%) dominated his narrative relative to Albanese,” explained Professor Ludwig.

Peter Danaher, Professor of Marketing and another collaborator on the project, elaborated on Dutton’s emotional profile.

“Although Mr Dutton touched lightly on positive emotions such as contentment (22%) and optimism (25%), the overall emotionality was negative. The majority of his comments were negative, with 12% more expressions relating to distrust and 14% more negative sentiment,” Professor Danaher stated. “The expressions during his speech paint a picture of an Australia facing growing dangers, at home and abroad.”

In stark contrast to Dutton’s emotionally defensive tone, the AI model picked up on a markedly more hopeful message from Albanese. According to Professor Ludwig, “His emotional expression palette featured significantly higher levels of optimism (46%) and lower use of all negative emotions, except for worry, which was similarly expressed by both candidates at about 40% of all of their speech turns.”

The data revealed that Albanese signalled more trust (14%) and commitment (46%), contributing to an overall positive sentiment of +14%, a sharp divergence from Dutton’s emotionally darker narrative. Albanese’s rhetoric leaned into the nation’s potential, with themes of unity and opportunity anchoring his vision.

Joy and excitement were all but absent from both leaders’ emotional arsenals – hinting that Australians aren’t being offered a feel-good future, but rather a serious choice between two stark emotional trajectories: one steeped in urgency and looming threats, the other charting a path of measured hope and national renewal.

Supported by the Australian Research Council (ARC), the AI model drew on real survey data to refine its emotional detection capabilities. Trained extensively on human emotional responses, Meta AI’s Llama 3 model surpassed benchmarks like GPT-4 Turbo and DeepSeek, achieving over 80% accuracy in emotion prediction.

As Australia approaches the polls tomorrow, the decision may not rest solely on policies – it’s equally about the emotional roadmap each leader provides for the country’s future.

“In 2025, emotions might just carry as much weight as economics,” said Professor Ludwig.
