hearts4heart and Heart Support Australia partner on global call to governments
Pharma News: Global Heart Hub has spearheaded a collaborative effort, uniting cardiovascular disease (CVD) patient communities, including hearts4heart and Heart Support Australia, alongside thought leaders to develop the inaugural global manifesto advocating for early detection and diagnosis of CVD.
Dr Christian Verdicchio, CEO of Heart Support Australia, said “As a contributor to this document which was formed following our meeting in Barcelona last year, it is clear that there is a need for a global call to action to our governments to seriously address the largest killer in the world through better prevention and awareness campaigns. It is also clear that patient organisations play an important part in advocating for change to policy makers.
“Global Heart Hub should be congratulated for bringing together so many patients organisations globally to identify and address the issue of CVD. We look forward to working with Global Heart Hub in a coordinated approach to continue to advocate for policy change in Australia in conjunction with our local partners and cardiac peak bodies.”
The manifesto was developed through a multi-stakeholder approach, bringing together 125 patient advocates, including 40 CVD patient organisations, along with key opinion leaders and multidisciplinary experts from the World Heart Federation and the European Society of Cardiology (ESC).
Neil Johnson, Executive Director of Global Heart Hub, highlighted the profound impact of delayed detection and diagnosis of CVD on patients and their families.
“For too long, patients and their families have faced the substantial impact of missed and late detection and diagnosis of CVD,” he stated. “Direct patient involvement has been central to the development of this document from concept to development.”
Tanya Hall, CEO of Hearts4heart, echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the transformative potential of the manifesto.
“We really need this manifesto to help guide us as patient organisations to not only map out the work that we do, but also to influence policy makers to put more funding and more focus on cardiovascular care, both in terms of early diagnosis and through to the full treatment pathway,” she remarked.
Professor Fausto Pinto, Immediate Past President of the World Heart Federation, praised the initiative, affirming, “The manifesto is something that we really feel can make a difference. We are working together on a united front to reduce the burden of disease and promote cardiovascular health.”
