DHL breaks ground on advanced, sustainable facility

Health Industry Hub | September 17, 2025 |

DHL Supply Chain Australia (DHL) has commenced construction of a state-of-the-art transport and warehousing hub at Edinburgh Park, South Australia. The facility will consolidate DHL’s three existing sites into a single, central, sustainable depot, serving clients across retail, technology, consumer, life sciences, and healthcare sectors.

These developments form part of DHL’s broader investments across Australia and New Zealand, positioning the company to hold the largest automated life sciences and healthcare warehouse footprint in the southern hemisphere. The expansion aligns with DHL Global Forwarding, Freight’s $150 million investment in robotics and automation across the region, announced in 2022 by Oscar de Bok.

Steve Thompsett, CEO of DHL Supply Chain Australia & New Zealand, said the new site is central to strengthening the company’s national service offerings for both existing and prospective customers.

“DHL offers 100% network coverage across Australia, and we are investing in Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth to expand services for our customers in these areas,” Thompsett said.

He added, “We’re committed to continued growth in South Australia, and this multi-sector, carbon-neutral warehouse will support a wide range of customers with their business requirements as well as sustainable supply chain goals. I’m particularly pleased that under the aegis of DHL Health Logistics, we’re bringing the highest quality Life Sciences and Healthcare storage and transport solutions to Adelaide.”

Designed with sustainability in mind, the facility will feature electric vehicle charging stations for DHL’s growing EV truck and van fleet, a rooftop solar array, LED lighting, a solar hot water system, and an intelligent building management system to optimise energy usage.

Scheduled for completion in Q3 2026, the site will add 20,000 square meters of warehouse and office space to support local and national customers operating in South Australia.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the facility, Bill Rolfe, SVP Transport for DHL Supply Chain Australia & New Zealand, said, “We’re excited to bring a cutting-edge facility that will meet the evolving needs of our customers and create new job opportunities.”

Rolfe added, “The investment in South Australia underpins our commitment to fostering positive industry development, empowering our workforce, and enhancing the capabilities of our teams.”

The Edinburgh Park facility will also serve as DHL’s South Australian Transport Hub, enabling expanded domestic freight services. The upgraded operations will provide flexible national road freight options, including dedicated fleet services or shared networks for cartons, pallets, skids, and other cargo.
