Calls grow to address glaring gaps in cancer-induced menopause: World Menopause Day

Health Industry Hub | October 18, 2024 |

Marking World Menopause Day on October 18, several organisations are drawing attention to the urgent need for enhanced support and resources for women who experience menopause as a result of cancer treatments or risk-reducing surgeries.

Jean Hailes for Women’s Health and Inherited Cancers Australia have partnered to ensure that Australian women facing medically induced menopause are not excluded from the national conversation on this critical health issue.

The recent Senate Inquiry into menopause and perimenopause in Australia, which released its report in September, underscored the significant impact of menopause on women’s physical and mental health, workplace engagement, and overall quality of life.

A national survey by Inherited Cancers Australia revealed that over three-quarters (76%) of respondents who had undergone tube or ovary removal for cancer treatment or risk reduction had not seen a menopause specialist. Many were unaware that such support even existed.

Sarah Powell, CEO of Inherited Cancers Australia, emphasised the gaps in care for these women.

“Women undergoing cancer treatment or preventative surgeries face the additional challenge of sudden menopause, often without adequate support or information,” she said.

One participant in the survey shared: “I’ve never been referred to a menopause specialist (and I’m not sure I knew they existed) even though I’m nearing the end of my treatment and am very likely menopausal at 36.”

In response to these concerns, Jean Hailes and Inherited Cancers Australia are launching the Medically Induced Menopause Support Project. This initiative aims to create tailored resources and support systems for women experiencing treatment-induced menopause.

Dr Sarah White, CEO of Jean Hailes, pointed out that while menopause in general is receiving more attention, it is essential that women facing medically induced menopause are not overlooked.

“The unique needs of these women require specialised care and support. By offering a range of evidence-based options and support, we can ensure that no woman feels isolated in her journey through medically induced menopause,” she stated.

The project will gather insights through focus groups and a national survey, using this data to develop comprehensive resources and support strategies.

“While menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) can be beneficial for many women, it’s not suitable for everyone, particularly some cancer survivors,” Dr White explained.

“Our partnership aims to explore and provide support for all women facing medically induced menopause, regardless of their ability to use hormone therapy.”

Both organisations stress the importance of individualised care. Powell said, “We encourage women experiencing medically induced menopause to consult with their healthcare providers about management options. These may include hormone replacement therapy when appropriate, or therapies such as lifestyle modifications and non-hormonal medications.”

HCF, Australia’s largest not-for-profit health fund, is also sponsoring the national Join the Conversation campaign, in partnership with Prevention Australia. This initiative aims to raise awareness, foster open discussions, and empower women to navigate menopause with confidence.

“The Senate Inquiry’s findings highlight that Australian women are navigating menopause without adequate information or support,” said Lindsay Carter, HCF’s Head of Brand & Content.

“HCF is on a mission to empower women to take charge of their health, supporting them to make more confident and informed decisions.”
