Biogen empowers athletes in sponsorship of Powerchair Football World Cup

Pharma News: Biogen revealed their prestigious platinum sponsorship of the highly anticipated 2023 International Federation of Powerchair Football (FIPFA) World Cup, set to take place in Sydney this October.
David Henderson, Managing Director of Biogen Australia and New Zealand, highlighted the significance of their sponsorship, stating, “Biogen is honoured to be one of the sponsors of the 2023 Powerchair Football World Cup. As a global leader in SMA and neurodegenerative conditions that cause disability, we understand that Powerchair Football is particularly important because at every level, it is more than a great sport – it represents ability and equal opportunity for all players.”
This exciting partnership between Biogen and FIPFA signifies a significant boost in funding, which will be instrumental in promoting and facilitating this remarkable event. The world’s top ten Powerchair Football teams from Australia, Argentina, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Japan, Northern Ireland, Uruguay, and the United States of America will gather in Sydney to compete for the ultimate glory of claiming this year’s prestigious Cup.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Alex Reilly, FIPFA Vice President, stated “FIPFA cannot wait for the upcoming Powerchair World Cup later this year in Australia, and we are delighted to have the support of a leading global biotechnology company in Biogen for the event.” This endorsement from a prominent organization like Biogen is a testament to the growing popularity and recognition of Powerchair Football worldwide.
Peter Turnbull, Head Coach of the Poweroos, Australia’s national team and FIPFA Organising Committee Lead, conveyed his delight at Biogen’s involvement. He stated, “We are delighted that Biogen has agreed to be one of our Platinum sponsors for the Powerchair Football World Cup, and we thank the entire Biogen team for their generosity in helping to bring this important occasion to life. We are grateful for Biogen’s commitment over several World Cups in supporting the sport to progress greater recognition of Powerchair Football around the world and now in Australia.”
Adding a personal touch to the story, Tristram Peters, a talented Poweroo and participant in this year’s World Cup, lives with the neurodegenerative condition known as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Peters enthusiastically debunked common assumptions about people with disabilities, saying, “There are so many assumptions made about people with disabilities. That we’re fragile, and we wrap ourselves up in cotton wool. But Powerchair Football is a physical and immensely skillful sport, just like the football we know and love. It’s a beautiful game.”
Peters also expressed his excitement about the opportunity for the Australian team to play in front of a home crowd at a World Cup, emphasizing, “For the Australian team – to get the opportunity to play in front of a home crowd, at a World Cup, is very special. We’re incredibly excited to welcome everyone to Australia – and to show them what the Poweroos can do.”
Mr Henderson concluded by expressing the Biogen team’s eagerness to witness the world-class Powerchair Football athletes in action, saying, “The Biogen team is very excited to welcome the world to Sydney, and together with our colleagues overseas, we can’t wait to cheer on the world’s greatest Powerchair Football athletes.”
