AbbVie steps up in environmental sustainability at medical conference

Health Industry Hub | May 29, 2023 |

Pharma News: AbbVie seized the spotlight at the 55th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australasian College of Dermatologists in Sydney, captivating attendees with a pressing topic: the intersection of environmental sustainability and the future of skin health.

Mounting evidence suggests that changing environmental conditions pose significant risks to dermatological wellbeing, including infectious skin diseases, skin cancer, and exacerbation of chronic inflammatory conditions like atopic dermatitis.

AbbVie, recognising the urgency of this issue, took the opportunity to sponsor the much-anticipated ‘Meet the Experts’ session, featuring a distinguished panel of dermatologists: Dr Fiona Bruce, Dr Rebecca Saunderson, Dr Eugene Tan, and Dr Austen Anderson. Together, they delved into the multifaceted realm of environmental sustainability, providing practical insights on adopting sustainable practices within dermatology practices.

Dr Rebecca Saunderson, a dermatologist from the Royal North Shore Hospital, emphasised the collective responsibility we all share in combating the impact of climate change on our health.

“Environmental sustainability is an issue that everyone is responsible for,” she asserted. “We can’t ignore the health impacts and dermatological consequences that result from climate change. We need all stakeholders to work together to elevate this conversation and raise awareness of the need for change. There are practical steps that dermatologists and the health care system can take that will make a difference for our future patients.”

Why ESG is a critical focus for Sanofi and Philips: Leaders talk the journey to meaningful impact

Sandro Mancy, Business Unit Manager of Dermatology at AbbVie, highlighted the company’s decision to focus on sustainability at the conference.

“In Australia we are making conscious decisions as an organisation and trying to choose more sustainable ways to do business. Locally we are identifying the things we can change today like our exhibition stand or cutting back on printed materials and travel. While we know we have a long way to go, everything makes a difference including helping to promote the issue of environmental sustainability for future health,” he stated.

In a display of its commitment to sustainability, AbbVie showcased an eco-friendly exhibition stand that left attendees impressed. The construction materials were meticulously chosen to ensure recyclability and reusability. The flooring was ingeniously crafted from recycled Cyprus Pine timber, while walls and counters were clad with environmentally conscious cardboard tubes. Stand fixtures, demonstrating AbbVie’s dedication to sustainability, were ingeniously made from Forest One plywood, a product boasting sustainability certification. The entire display was adorned with ‘EcoPaint,’ a premium water-based paint that is entirely free of Volatile Organic Compounds, further reducing its environmental impact.

AbbVie’s commendable dedication to driving the conversation on environmental sustainability within the dermatology community is poised to inspire change and elevate awareness of the critical need to protect our skin health amidst a rapidly changing world.
