Sydney launches Innovation Hub to revolutionise healthcare research

Health Industry Hub | May 8, 2023 |

Medical: The New South Wales healthcare sector has taken a major leap forward with the launch of the Sydney Biomedical Accelerator (SBA) Innovation Hub. The innovation hub, which was established through a partnership between the Sydney Local Health District and The University of Sydney, aims to create a shared collaboration space for clinicians, researchers, scientists, students, academics, and industry partners.

The innovation hub, located at Gloucester House on RPA’s campus, marks the first phase of the SBA, which is an over $650 million initiative between the NSW Government, the District and the University, backed by the generous support of donors. It is expected to become a state-of-the-art complex of three interconnected buildings across RPA and the University – a 36,000m2 innovation, education, and research partnership.

The SBA has been benchmarked against the world’s leading biomedical facilities such as the Karolinska Institutet (50 percent of Sweden’s life science companies in one precinct), the University of Toronto’s MaRS Discovery District and MassBio (life science super-cluster of 1,100 members including Harvard, MIT, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital.)

“The Innovation Hub is an incubator for ideas allowing us to bring our people together to begin the work of the SBA enhancing the culture, operations and physical connection between biomedical research industry partnerships and clinical services,” Dr Teresa Anderson, the District’s Chief Executive said.

“It will help us accelerate the translation of research from bench to bedside, and most importantly, it will lead to improved health outcomes for the people of New South Wales, Australia and internationally,” Dr Anderson said.

Professor Mark Scott, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Sydney said “This launch is one of many exciting firsts as the SBA vision becomes a reality and the possibilities of this SLHD and University partnership, together with the NSW government, become tangible. Critically, the Innovation Hub, by building on our startup successes and industry connections, will support our combined ambition to fast-track scientific discovery into health outcomes through innovative research and commercialisation.”

The SBA will also feature a strong partnership with the Centenary Institute, which will be its first research collaborator.

“This is the best day of my life. This is so exciting. To me, the ultimate goal of everything we do…  it’s all about the patient. They will be the ultimate beneficiaries of the SBA. And I’m so proud to be part of it,” Professor Christopher Semsarian, a world-renowned cardiologist who leads the Molecular Cardiology Program at the Centenary Institute, said.

The SBA is a significant step towards the transformation of Sydney into a world-class hub for biomedical research and innovation, with industry partners on campus working very closely with researchers, academics, and healthcare professionals.
