Six-decade research institute to close as government funding comes too late

Health Industry Hub | September 25, 2026 |

The Hudson Institute of Medical Research, a 66-year-old international leader in childhood cancer and women’s health research, is set to be folded into Monash University, with at least 75 roles expected to be lost.

The proposed integration comes amid mounting financial and structural pressures across Australia’s medical research sector, where institutions face a persistent gap between the cost of conducting research and the funding available to support it.

The underlying pressures are structural. Government research grants cover less than half the true cost of the research they fund, while public funding has remained flat or declined in real terms for well over a decade. At the same time, research institutions have increasingly relied on operating models heavily dependent on precarious, short-term labour.

The scale of the pressure is underscored by estimates from the Association of Australian Medical Research Institutes (AAMRI), which warns that 10 of Victoria’s 14 independent medical research institutes could close their doors by 2030.

The warning comes as the federal government moves to address some of the sector’s longstanding funding shortfall. The National Health and Medical Research Strategy was released in May, alongside an announcement of $128 million to begin supporting the indirect costs of research through the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF). MRFF disbursements are also scheduled to increase annually, reaching $1 billion a year by 2030.

For institutions already under severe financial pressure, however, the additional funding comes too late.

Under the proposed arrangement, Hudson would be absorbed into Monash University’s Sub-Faculty of Clinical and Molecular Medicine (CaMM) within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Hudson would retain its distinct brand identity and research focus, while its staff would remain co-located at the Monash Health Translation Precinct in Clayton.

Monash University Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise), Professor Robyn Ward AM, said “The proposed Monash-Hudson integration is aimed at strengthening our collective impact and accelerating the translation of laboratory discoveries into real-world clinical outcomes. Bringing together Hudson’s specialised research excellence with Monash’s global networks and resources would provide a more robust and scalable platform for innovation, continuing our ability to attract leading researchers and partners, and ensures we remain competitive on the global stage.”

The proposal will now enter a formal consultation process, with Hudson staff and their representatives to be consulted from 17 September to 9 October 2026, in accordance with Hudson’s Enterprise Agreement.

A final decision on the proposed structure will be made after the consultation period. If approved, full operational integration is proposed to take place in the first half of 2027.
