Inside Amgen’s program shaping next-generation female leaders in cancer research

Health Industry Hub | May 27, 2026 |

Australian cancer researcher, Dr Brooke Pereira from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, stepped into Amgen’s Thousand Oaks headquarters and San Francisco site for a four-day preceptorship, as part of Amgen Australia’s three-year partnership with the Australian Cancer Research Foundation (ACRF).

The Empowering Women in Cancer Research Preceptorship supports early- to mid-career female cancer researchers in Australia by providing international exposure through engagement with Amgen’s global leaders across multiple functions.

In this Health Industry Hub podcast, Cae Tolman, Country Senior Medical Director for Amgen ANZ, and Dr Pereira reflect on the intent behind the preceptorship and what it reveals about the often-invisible distance between academic discovery and industry-scale translation. They also explore how exposure to global R&D leadership can shift how emerging researchers see their own ambition, confidence, and future direction.

The conversation also turns to where the real opportunities lie in strengthening collaboration between academia and the pharmaceutical industry, and the long-term role the Amgen-ACRF partnership is aiming to play in shaping the next generation of cancer research leadership in Australia.

In reimagining healthcare across the entire patient journey, Health Industry HubTM is the only one-stop-hub uniting the diversity of the Pharma, MedTech, Diagnostics & Biotech sectors to inspire meaningful change.
