$100 million research investment to be an immunology game-changer
Medical: A cutting-edge immunology research centre at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute (WEHI) has been announced by the Snow Medical Research Foundation. Collaborating closely with the Royal Melbourne Hospital, this initiative aims to assemble top-tier Australian and international researchers, poised to enhance the approach to understanding and treating the immune system.
Endorsed by an initial commitment of $100 million over a decade, this partnership marks one of the most substantial and enduring philanthropic ventures in Australian history. Tom Snow, Chair of Snow Medical, expressed his enthusiasm, saying “We empower bold transformative research across Australia by backing the best and brightest researchers – and resourcing them with the tools they need to be world-class.”
Common immune conditions such as asthma, allergies, and arthritis impact millions globally, yet treatment options are often limited. The conventional approach to medical research, focusing on individual diseases, has yielded few advancements. This innovative partnership between WEHI and the Royal Melbourne Hospital aims to bridge this gap.
Snow Medical’s investment extends beyond supporting exceptional scientists. Their commitment will also finance Snow Research Clinics, where patients can engage in immune health clinical trials and receive cutting-edge treatments. Starting with the Royal Melbourne Hospital, these clinics will progressively expand across Victoria, positioning the region as a global frontrunner in immune disease treatment.
“The integrated design of the Snow Centre for Immune Health will ensure the best treatments are immediately available to patients in the clinic,” stated Professor Jo Douglass, Director of Research, Royal Melbourne Hospital and Snow Centre for Immune Health co-leader.
Led by Professor Phil Hodgkin, Joint Head of the Immunology Division at WEHI, and Professor Jo Douglass, the centre’s initial collaborators span renowned institutions globally, including the University of Cambridge and The Francis Crick Institute in the UK, Northeastern University and Rockefeller University in the US, and prominent Australian entities like the Garvan Institute and the University of Adelaide.
