Westmead Private Hospital enters next stage of expansion
MedTech News: Work has started on Sydney’s Westmead Private Hospital’s next stage of expansion, which aims to create a “centre of excellence” providing comprehensive healthcare in one location for Western Sydney residents.
The third part of a planned four-stage development will add two new operating theatres, 13 consulting suites and 28 additional beds, plus upgrades of two cardiac catheter laboratories.
“Our development will further assist in making the Westmead Health Precinct a centre of excellence in health services, education and medical research, but most importantly we will be able to provide better facilities for our patients,” hospital CEO Mike Flatley said.
“With 13 new consulting suites we will be able to have more specialists on-site, meaning patients won’t need to travel to multiple health precincts when planning their medical treatment,” he added.
Due to be completed in 2022, it follows the stage two $25 million upgrade of Westmead Private Hospital’s maternity wing and additional surgical beds, which opened in 2019.
“Our new parents are really enjoying the luxury hotel-style of our new maternity unit. We want the whole family – mother, partner and baby – to feel relaxed and comfortable in their surroundings while being supported by experienced doctors and midwives when they stay with us,” Mr Flatley said.
“Once complete, the stage three development will offer that similar standard of luxurious patient facilities in other areas of medicine.”
The new development will allow Westmead to broaden its scope of work and increase theatre time, along with the additional bed capacity.
“We know our patients want to be as comfortable as possible when recovering from surgery and our extra 28 beds will all be single, private rooms to give them with the best experience in patient care,” Mr Flatley said.
