The private health illusion: Australians pay for premium care but get yesterday’s medical technology

Australians with private health insurance believe they have premium access to medical technology – but do they? In this Health Industry Hub podcast, Sarah Najdek, Managing Director ANZ at Johnson & Johnson MedTech, and Dr Emily Kotschet, Electrophysiologist at the Victorian Heart Hospital, unpack new national research that exposes the widening gap between perception and reality in the private healthcare system.

The findings are hard to ignore: 86% of Australians assume private healthcare provides equal, if not greater, access to the latest medical technology. Yet the reality tells a different story.

“A lot of technology lags in the private system a year or two, which is a dramatic difference to what it used to be,” Dr Kotschet warned.

The duo reveal a private health system increasingly constrained by outdated policy and structural bottlenecks. For all the talk about value-based care and innovation, the private health system is creeping towards something that looks uncomfortably like US style managed care.

Dr Kotschet reflects on how catheter ablation has advanced in the treatment of atrial fibrillation over the past five years. Yet despite more than half a million Australians living with AF, far fewer than expected receive the procedure due to the imposed ‘cap’.

“I’m left with a less efficient or different procedure to what I would have chosen,” Dr Kotschet said. “For some patients, when you need that [particular] technology for their type of heart disease, you take them publicly.”

If the Productivity Commission acknowledges that healthcare investment delivers a net social benefit, why isn’t that evidence driving faster adoption of innovative health technologies?

“The government’s five pillar productivity agenda calls for a world-class health technology assessment system,” Najdek said. “Quite frankly, we’re still bogged down by outdated processes.”

This conversation is a necessary confrontation with the uncomfortable truth: red tape, policy inertia and misaligned incentives are choking Australians’ expectations of private healthcare and undermining the value of private health insurance.
