Robotic vs. conventional surgery for endometriosis amidst rising hospitalisations
MedTech & Diagnostics News: Endometriosis, affecting one in seven Australian women, has witnessed a surge in hospitalisations in recent years. With the expansion of robotic-assisted surgery, what does the evidence say on its advantages when compared to conventional surgery?
Dr Mikhail Sarofim, obstetrician and gynaecologist from John Flynn Private Hospital, said “I believe in offering women a tailored approach to their health care and, with this advanced technology and the right training, gynaecologists can offer patients more options for their health management.”
Dr Sarofim said the Da Vinci robot and robotic-assisted surgery supported shorter operations and better recovery.
“Designed for minimally invasive procedures, robotic-assisted surgery can help to reduce operative times and enhance recovery and outcomes for women,” he said.
However, a systematic review and meta-analysis published last year revealed that robot-assisted laparoscopy does not demonstrable advantages over conventional laparoscopy in endometriosis surgery.
The two groups showed no difference in intraoperative and postoperative complications. However, robot-assisted laparoscopy (RAL) procedures took almost half an hour longer than conventional laparoscopy (CL), a clinically relevant finding. Interestingly, hospital stay duration post-surgery also showed no notable differences between RAL and CL.
John Flynn Private Hospital CEO, Joanne Mitchell, said she was pleased Gold Coast women now had the option of robotic-assisted gynaecological surgery closer to home.
“March is Endometriosis Awareness Month and it’s with great excitement that we welcome Dr Sarofim and our new robotic surgical offering,” she said.
