Ramsay Health Care CEO resigns amid leadership and operational restructure

Carmel Monaghan, CEO of Ramsay Health Care Australia, has announced her intention to retire later this year, concluding nearly five years at the helm of the country’s largest private hospital operator. Her departure comes as Ramsay Health Care unveils significant leadership changes and a revised operational structure under Managing Director & Group CEO, Natalie Davis.
As part of the restructure, Ramsay Australia’s leadership team will report directly to Davis in a move the company says will “streamline” operations, enhancing alignment between group capabilities and the Australian hospitals, patients, and workforce. Two senior roles – Chief Operating Officer, Australia, and Chief Commercial Officer, Australia – will be created, both reporting directly to Davis.
Monaghan acknowledged the impact of her decision, stating, “There is never a good time to announce a departure and I know this will come as a shock to many, but I have been planning this for some time. I leave the business in the very capable hands of our future leaders and look forward to being able to assist our new Group Managing Director Natalie Davis through this important transition.”
Reflecting on her 27-year tenure, she expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to lead the organisation. She said “Working at Ramsay for the past 27 years, including as CEO, has been the deepest honour. I feel very lucky to have spent my working life in such an amazing organisation and to have been given so many opportunities.
“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all Ramsay staff and doctors and to all our external stakeholders for your support of me over the past few years. We’ve worked together through good times and challenging ones like Covid. I have always aimed to live up to Paul Ramsay’s culture of people caring for people and I hope that has been evident to all those I have dealt with.”
Monaghan’s leadership has been widely praised across the healthcare sector. Matthew Koce, CEO of Members Health Fund Alliance, highlighted her contributions, stating, “The contribution you have made is enormous, benefiting the entire Australian healthcare system. Few could match what you have achieved, it is truly remarkable and inspirational.”
Mark Middleton OAM, Global CEO of Icon Group, echoed similar sentiments on social media: “All I can say to this is thank you for your incredible contribution to Australian healthcare over so many years and congratulations on a stellar career. We will miss your leadership, common sense and commitment to partnership.”
Samantha Kent, a Nursing Unit Manager at Ramsay Health Care, described Monaghan as “one in a million, a people person and someone Paul Ramsay would have been extremely proud of.”
Davis, who previously led Woolworths’ supermarket division before stepping into her role at Ramsay Health Care in mid-2024, outlined her vision for the company’s next phase.
“These changes are about setting up Ramsay for the future – working smarter, building capability and accelerating our transformation and performance, with focus on our core Australian hospital business,” she said.
