Philips joins AI-enabled cardiac CT market with latest technology
MedTech & Diagnostics News: Philips Healthcare unveiled its AI-enabled CT scanner at last week’s European Congress of Radiology (ECR). This announcement follows a trend initiated at the 2023 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), where Siemens, Canon, and Hitachi also introduced their respective CT scanners aimed at the growing cardiac computed tomography angiography (CCTA) market.
Frans Venker, Business Leader of CT at Philips, emphasised the company’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by radiologists, stating “We listened to radiologists about the issues they face every day and what they wanted out of a next-generation CT system. We then combined the latest imaging and AI technologies to meet their needs.”
The CT 5300 system stands out for its precision and reliability, delivering more accurate imaging results to effectively manage the rise in complex cardiac cases. Equipped with advanced AI capabilities, the system caters to diagnostic purposes, interventional procedures, and screening. The integration of the new detector, automated patient isocentering on the table, and other AI features streamlines workflow efficiency, enhancing patient outcomes and department productivity.
Philips recognises the current challenges in radiology departments, marked by a shortage of radiologists and technologists. Mr Venker explained “We’ve leveraged AI in virtually every aspect of CT 5300, freeing both CT technicians and radiologists from tedious, time-consuming tasks so they can spend more time focused on their patients.”
Moreover, the CT 5300 system incorporates virtual tools for real-time collaboration and clinical/technical support, offering a solution to challenges related to increased patient caseloads, staff shortages, and budget constraints. Philips positions this system as a bridge, bringing high-end scanner functionalities into a more affordable and versatile platform, designed for lower energy consumption.
The system’s Nanopanel Precise detector is a game-changer in AI-based reconstruction, providing high-quality images at a significantly lower radiation dose. Philips’ testing indicates an 80% lower dose, achieving up to 85% lower noise and 60% better low-contrast detectability compared to conventional image reconstruction.
Highlighting the system’s impact on cardiac care, Philips emphasised the emerging trend toward adopting a “CT-first” strategy for triaging patients with chest pain and undiagnosed coronary artery disease. The CT 5300, meeting advanced diagnostic imaging requirements for cardiac care guidelines, also extends its applications to trauma care and interventional procedures.
Dr Hilmar Kühl, head of radiology at St. Bernhard-Hospital Kamp-Lintfort, Germany expressed the significance of the precise imaging technology. He said “With this latest system from Philips, we see an improvement in image quality with Precise Imaging, and for the first time, we can now visualize cardiac anatomy by using Precise Cardiac nearly artifact-free, which is very valuable to help improve cardiac care for our patients.”
