New MTAA Chair reveals policy and advocacy priorities for 2023

MedTech News: Susan Martin, Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson MedTech, has stepped in to her new role as the Chair of Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) Board.
In an interview with Health Industry Hub, Ms Martin recognised the top 2022 highlights led by the MTAA Board, and unveiled the key policy and advocacy priorities for 2023.
There are significant challenges across the broader healthcare ecosystem impacting patient care when we consider the lack of timely access to GPs, elective surgery backlogs in public hospitals, the recent AMA report card showing health insurers are delivering less value to policyholders, and the ongoing inequities of care in remote and regional areas. Ms Martin discussed the critical challenges facing the medtech sector this year and how the industry can continue to create compelling value for patients, clinicians and payers.
The Prostheses List (PL) reforms have also been complex and challenging. Multiple stakeholder involvement has provided the diversity needed to ensure the outcomes are fit-for-purpose. Most would agree that the relationship between health insurers and the medtech sector has become strained. Ms Martin shared her views on this and how stakeholders should proceed to ensure the PL reforms do not compromise high-quality patient care.
Lastly, Ms Martin elaborated on the Board’s strategic objectives in 2023 and the health policy outcomes that will improve some of the current health challenges and inequities that patients face within the healthcare ecosystem.
