MTAA inaugural Health Data Summit: Addressing the critical gaps in connected care

Health Industry Hub | August 1, 2024 |

MedTech & Diagnostics News: The Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA), in collaboration with APACMed and KPMG, hosted its inaugural Health Data Summit this week in Canberra.

The closed-door event drew industry leaders, government representatives, and key opinion makers from Australia and the Asia-Pacific region to address pressing challenges in health data governance and explore collaborative approaches to optimising health data for patient benefits.

MTAA CEO Ian Burgess emphasised the necessity of leveraging health data to secure the nation’s digital health future.

“We had an outstanding Summit that covered a range of topics relevant to the transformative potential of health data to drive the future of healthcare, supporting innovation, quality and efficient care. To maximise these benefits, key areas of focus are interoperability, standards, cybersecurity, privacy and building patients’ trust in the collaborative value offered by proper access to, and sharing of, data,” Burgess told Health Industry Hub.

The secure sharing and reuse of data is one of the four key target outcomes in Australia’s Digital Health Blueprint for the next decade. Key initiatives to achieve this include creating a national legislative framework for health information sharing across states and territories and modernising My Health Record.

The updated National Digital Health Strategy 2023-2028 also targets data accessibility that informs critical decision-making at the individual, community and national levels.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler underscored the importance of these initiatives during the Blueprint’s launch last year, stating, “We need all parts of our health system to seamlessly connect patients and their healthcare providers, to help Australians live healthier lives. Our Digital Health Blueprint will allow our health system to provide more personalised and connected health care for all Australians, wherever they live.”

In the ASEAN region, APACMed has been championing policies to enhance data accessibility, improve computational infrastructure, and promote interoperability and international health data standards through capacity building and best practice sharing.

Burgess added, “A common theme from our summit was that Australia’s healthcare system is well placed to develop and adopt digital health technologies to improve healthcare delivery for consumers. It’s the complexities that come with data ownership and the rapidly increasing volume of available data that presents one of the bigger challenges.

“I’m pleased to say thanks to the leaders in the room, there is a strong desire for collaboration between industry, government, patients and healthcare stakeholders to maximise the benefits of health data.”
