MTAA and PTA CEOs voice outlook for the year ahead

Health Industry Hub | January 16, 2025 |

Ian Burgess, CEO of the Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA), and Dean Whiting, CEO of Pathology Technology Australia (PTA), recount key achievements from last year while offering a forward-looking perspective for 2025 – a Federal election year brimming with both uncertainty and opportunity.

For MTAA, 2024 was a year marked by impactful advocacy and tangible outcomes. Burgess expressed pride in the association’s efforts to enhance access to lifesaving and life-improving medical technologies.

“With the support of our members, we achieved significant milestones,” Burgess told Health industry Hub.

“These included bocking the removal of surgery-vital General Use Items (GUIs) on the Prescribed List (PL), improving TGA regulatory frameworks, and relaunching the Women in MedTech – Women in Leadership Mentoring Program for 2025. Additionally, our collaboration through the CTCM Program boosted support for Australia’s early-stage medtech industry.”

For PTA, 2024 represented a transformative year. Whiting described it as a “break-out year” for the organisation, with notable progress in advocacy, education, and collaboration.

“One of the highlights was PTA-C/24, our inaugural Congress, which brought together over 180 stakeholders from across the healthcare landscape to find consensus-driven solutions to some of our most significant health challenges,” Whiting shared.

He further added, “We are particularly proud of giving patients, health professionals and advocacy bodies a collective voice for faster and more equitable access to pathology technology through the Missing Piece campaign.”

Looking ahead, both leaders view 2025 not merely as a year of uncertainty but as an opportunity to redefine what is possible.

Burgess painted a vision of untapped potential, saying “From AI and digital health to next-generation devices, the possibilities for improving patient outcomes and healthcare delivery are extraordinary.

“I’m also encouraged by the growing collaboration from clinicians, hospitals, doctors, and patient advocates who share our vision for improving access to lifesaving medtech and putting the patient at the heart of everything we do.”

Whiting pointed to the shift toward a preventative health model as a critical opportunity.

“We are seeing glimmers of recognition that for the healthcare system to remain sustainable, affordable and accessible to all, we need systemic change,” he told Health Industry Hub. “We have the technology available and emerging to move from a sickness-based healthcare system to a more predictive, preventative and personalised, wellness-based system. This will take time, money and political will, but is absolutely necessary.”

Inspiration for the Complex Journey Ahead

As the nation heads into a politically charged year, both leaders draw inspiration from timeless wisdom to guide their path.

Whiting cited Charles Darwin’s quote; It is the long history of humankind (and animal kind, too) that those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed. This serves as a powerful reminder that success isn’t about resisting change, but about mastering it and using it as a catalyst for growth.

Burgess, on the other hand, reflected on a quote from Michael Porter; Innovation is the central issue in economic prosperity. Organisations that embrace uncertainty as a chance to innovate thrive in volatile environments.

“As we face the challenges and uncertainties of this Federal election year, I find strength in this quote as a reminder that challenges often bring opportunities for growth and progress,” Burgess concluded.
