Medtronic’s remarkable philanthropy journey earns prestigious award nomination

MedTech & Diagnostics News: In a remarkable display of corporate philanthropy, Medtronic Australia and New Zealand has been acknowledged by the Queensland Community Foundation for their nomination for the prestigious 2023 Queensland Corporate Philanthropy Award, presented by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
The nomination serves as a testament to Medtronic’s 20-year commitment to the QUT Biomechanics and Spine Research Group (BSRG) and their unwavering dedication to improving the lives of individuals affected by spinal deformities and disorders.
With a cumulative contribution of $3.3 million over the past two decades, Medtronic’s support has played a pivotal role in advancing the groundbreaking research conducted by the QUT BSRG. Not limited to financial assistance, Medtronic has also generously provided medical equipment and technology, facilitating research and clinical trials with esteemed Queensland charities. Moreover, they have forged partnerships with various universities to fund and support studies on neurological disorders, including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy.
Associate Professor Paige Little, Principal Fellow of Spine Research, expressed her admiration for Medtronic’s philanthropic efforts, emphasising their transformative impact on medical research and healthcare organisations in Queensland.
“Medtronic’s dedication to fostering partnerships, providing resources, and encouraging employee volunteerism has had a profound effect on our community,” said A/Professor Little. “I am thrilled that QUT has nominated Medtronic for the Queensland Community Foundation Philanthropy awards, recognising their outstanding contributions and commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of individuals in our region.”
Dr Geoff Gaskin, Spinal Orthopaedic Surgeon and BSRG Collaborative Research Director, who co-founded the Spine Research Group with Professor Mark Pearcy in 2002, shared his first-hand experience of Medtronic’s philanthropic support.
“As a healthcare professional, I have witnessed the impact of Medtronic’s contributions in Queensland,” said Dr Gaskin. “Their generous contributions, whether through financial support, employee volunteering, or donations of medical equipment, have greatly benefited our local community. Medtronic’s commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes is truly commendable, and they are well-deserving of the Queensland Community Foundation Philanthropy awards nomination.”
Maree Izatt, Clinical Project Coordinator, expressed her gratitude for Medtronic’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare outcomes. “We are honoured to nominate Medtronic for the Queensland Community Foundation Philanthropy awards,” said Ms Izatt. “Their unwavering support and dedication to improving healthcare outcomes in our community have made a significant impact. Through their philanthropic initiatives, Medtronic has demonstrated a true commitment to making a difference and positively influencing the lives of those in need.”
