Medtech industry celebrates winners of MTAA Awards

Health Industry Hub | October 24, 2024 |

MedTech & Diagnostics News: The 2024 Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) Industry Award winners were unveiled last night, showcasing the trailblazers shaping the medtech sector.

Among the highlights were the three Women in MedTech Awards, sponsored by Varian and presented by Rebecca Cortiula, Senior Managing Director Australasia at Varian Medical Systems. Cortiula, recently promoted to an international role, will soon be relocating to the US.

The Women in MedTech Emerging Women in Leadership Award 2024 was awarded to Judith Raj of Dentalife Australia. This award, exclusive to MTAA members, celebrates emerging female leaders in the medical technology industry.

As General Manager of Melbourne-based DentaLife, Raj has demonstrated excellence in leadership, particularly during the global pandemic when the company scaled up production of its disinfectant technology to support Australia’s healthcare needs. The company’s success underscores the importance of a resilient local supply chain.

As the General Manager of DentaLife, Judith’s leadership exemplifies excellence and dedication to advancing the industry. She is also the recent recipient of the Australian Dental Industry Association Women in Dentistry Scholarship.

The Women in MedTech Company Champion Award 2024 was presented to Boston Scientific. This award recognises companies that have led efforts in advancing Women in MedTech goals within their organisation or the industry.

Boston Scientific recently earned its second consecutive Great Place To Work certification for Australia and New Zealand. Notably, 88% of its employees praised the company’s workplace culture, a stark contrast to the 56% satisfaction rate typical of Australian companies.

“To quote our CEO speaking at our recent investor day: ‘There’s a lot to think about in your day job … but if you focus most on culture, talent, and innovation and put your energy there, typically good things happen,'” Michael Baulch, Vice President & Managing Director of Boston Scientific ANZ told Health Industry Hub recently.

The Women in MedTech Individual Champion Award 2024 was awarded to Paula Williams, Business Unit Leader of Electrophysiology at Johnson & Johnson MedTech Australia & New Zealand. This award celebrates individuals who have significantly advanced the Women in MedTech mission.

Williams has a long history of championing the development and leadership of women within MedTech.

“During the past 3 years, she has played a pivotal role in leading Johnson & Johnson’s Women’s Leadership & Inclusion group in ANZ, mentoring, developing and inspiring many women across J&J. Her passion and dedication have driven tangible outcomes within J&J, including career & personal development for women, as well as strong male allyship,” the company said.

Sue Martin, departing Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson MedTech ANZ and Chair of the MTAA Board, announced the final two awards of the night.

The Outstanding Achievement Award went to Falko Thiele, Director of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs at BIOTRONIK. This award recognises individuals who have made an extraordinary impact on the medical technology industry in Australia, whether through industry development, leadership, innovation, or improvements in patient outcomes.

With over 20 years in the medical device sector, Thiele has overseen numerous clinical trials in Australia and New Zealand, ranging from small-scale studies to major international trials. His leadership extends beyond his role at BIOTRONIK, as he chairs the Clinical Investigations Interest Group at the MTAA, promoting Australia as a key destination for medical device trials.

The Kerrin Rennie Award was awarded to Annalise.ai, recognising their innovative contributions to improving Australian health outcomes through medical technology.

Annalise.ai has become the nation’s most widely deployed AI solution, with one in three radiologists using their technology. The company’s AI is now being implemented in Hong Kong’s public health system, working across Accident and Emergency departments. Additionally, Annalise.ai is collaborating with nearly 50 NHS Trusts in the UK and expanding into Europe, including Italy, Germany, Holland, and Switzerland.

Their AI chest X-ray solution, trained on over 820,000 images, has shown remarkable potential in detecting tumours. Trials reveal that the technology shaved nine days off the time to treatment for patients and could have diagnosed 21% of lung cancer patients almost 10.5 months earlier. It also increased treatable lung cancer cases by 26%, highlighting its transformative impact on healthcare outcomes.
