J&J MedTech’s scholarships shine a bright light on our nursing heroes

Health Industry Hub | August 14, 2023 |

MedTech & Diagnostics News: In a tribute to the invaluable contribution of healthcare heroes, the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies ANZ proudly marked a significant milestone by awarding scholarships to 20 exceptional nurses at a ceremony held at Parliament House in Canberra.

This momentous occasion, conducted in partnership with the Australian College of Nursing (ACN), stands as a noteworthy investment in the future of Australian healthcare. The event recognised and rewarded these nurses’ unwavering dedication and commitment to their noble profession.

The scholarships, a beacon of hope and support, encompass a fully-funded Graduate Certificate Nursing program across a spectrum of seven specialised areas. Notably, these areas of expertise include Leadership and Management, Critical Care Nursing, Community and Primary Health Nursing, Perioperative Nursing, Oncology Nursing, and the pioneering domain of Digital Health.

In attendance were Sue Martin, Managing Director of MedTech ANZ, and ACN CEO, Adjunct Professor Kylie Ward. Senators and MPs, among them Milton Dick MP, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Peta Murphy MP, Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Friends of Nursing Committee, added to the ceremonial grandeur. The presence of Peta Murphy MP, herself a breast cancer survivor, lent a deeply personal touch, highlighting the profound impact of nursing on patients’ lives.

The ceremony pulsated with passion as scholarship recipients shared their poignant narratives. Donna Davenport, Prasanth Nair, Elizabeth Ferrier, and Catherine Gillam, all celebrated nurses in their own right, painted vivid portraits of their experiences, laying bare the profound impact of their profession on society.

Of paramount significance was the recognition of regional and remote nurses who provide a lifeline to communities with limited access to healthcare. Alana Nixon, a proud Dhungutti woman, embodies this spirit. Ms Nixon’s fervent desire to enhance healthcare for her indigenous community found a powerful ally in her Community and Primary Health Nursing scholarship.

Catherine Gillam extolled the strategic significance of these scholarships. Her role as a Clinical Nurse Consultant in cancer care encompasses a multitude of responsibilities, guiding patients through every stage of their arduous journey. She emphasised the symbiotic relationship between specialist nursing education and optimised patient outcomes.

“Knowledge is power and post graduate education is the key to creating specialist nurses and optimal patient outcomes,” declared Ms Gillam.

Elizabeth Ferrier, a beacon of compassion, takes flight as a nurse and midwife with the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) in Queensland. She embarks on a journey of leadership and management studies, igniting a spark that promises to illuminate her entire team. Ms Ferrier’s dedication extends beyond her role to the heart of remote communities, where RFDS serves as a lifeline.

“This scholarship allows me to support our nursing staff by learning to be a better nurse leader, which helps develop and retain my exceptional team of flight nurses. This is really important for regional and remote communities of Queensland, many of which have very limited access to health care, and who rely on the RFDS,” remarked Ms Ferrier.
