Government ignored IV fluid shortage warnings for over a year

Health Industry Hub | August 16, 2024 |

MedTech & Diagnostics News: Australia is grappling with a critical shortage of intravenous (IV) fluid products from all three suppliers – Baxter Healthcare, B. Braun, and Fresenius Kabi. But perhaps the most pressing question is: why has the government ignored warnings about this looming crisis for over a year?

Shadow Minister for Health and Aged Care, Anne Ruston, expressed her frustration in Parliament, stating, “When asked about the issue in question time, Minister [Katy] Gallagher stated that the government has been aware of the impending shortage since at least May 2023.

“But they set up a monitoring group last Friday, in August 2024. We are beyond monitoring, Minister. We are absolutely in need of dire and urgent action.”

Minister Ruston criticised the Federal Health Minister, Mark Butler’s inaction, emphasising the lack of assurance that patients would not be harmed due to this shortage.

“We have a government who keeps talking about a future made in Australia but who can’t even guarantee the supply of sterile salt water, which is absolutely essential to the operation of our health system. This is a crisis of national importance, and the time for the government to stand up and show leadership is right now,” she stated.

The shortage has been attributed to global manufacturing issues and a spike in demand, but other theories on social media suggest that the U.S. may be stockpiling IV fluids for troops in the Middle East amid escalating tensions.

Dr Christine Lai, Councillor and Chair of the Professional Standards and Fellowship Services Committee at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS), stressed that there is a need for “nationally coordinated strategy that is informed by healthcare professionals.”

She added, “The government needs to clearly communicate how it is addressing the current situation to clinicians and the healthcare sector and develop a comprehensive strategy to ensure medicines supply at all stages of the pipeline.

“Longer-term, we should consider the development of onshore medical manufacturing to insulate Australia from future medicine supply shortages.”

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) presidents are also calling for a concerted and transparent national response to medicine shortages, including the IV fluid shortages. The AMA member feedback demonstrated “a clear desire to see a coordinated response that ensures all practitioners are kept informed. Clinicians want to know the degree of medical shortages, how they are being managed and assurance that appropriate action is being taken to guarantee supply chains for essential products are protected.”

Further highlighting the dire situation in hospitals, already under immense pressure, Minister Ruston said “It’s been reported that this shortage has now reached disaster levels. Doctors in every hospital around our nation are being told to ration the supplies of saline fluid that they are using to care for their patients.”

She delivered a stark warning to the public: “This should send a chill through the spine of every Australian who relies on being able to get access to adequate emergency healthcare in our nation.”
