Largest dialysis care medtech sets firm focus on environmental sustainability

Health Industry Hub | August 11, 2023 |

In a display of commitment to sustainable healthcare practices, the largest private provider of dialysis care in Australia, unveiled a leap towards a greener future at their state-of-the-art plant in Smithfield. The event, attended by Dr Hugh McDermott, State Member for New South Wales, was a milestone in environmental stewardship and innovative healthcare production.

Nestled in the heart of Sydney’s Western Suburbs, Fresenius Medical Care’s facility has not only embraced cutting-edge sustainable methodologies but has also turned into a beacon of hope for both patients and the local community. The inauguration of a colossal solar energy array, consisting of an impressive 537 Risen 540W solar panels, powered by 3x 50kW and 1x 110kW Sungrow inverters, is a testament to Fresenius Medical Care’s unwavering determination to meet global emission targets head-on.

The 290kW solar powerhouse is set to single-handedly thwart a staggering 342 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. To put this remarkable feat into perspective, the environmental impact is equivalent to the CO2-absorbing prowess of a small forest comprising a whopping 64,871 trees. Furthermore, the solar system’s performance will illuminate the plant’s energy needs, accounting for 84%, which translates to a 52% reduction in grid consumption. This stride towards sustainability effectively avoids emissions that would otherwise be akin to 7,222 long-haul flights every year.

“As a leading global provider of renal health products and services, Fresenius Medical Care has a special responsibility to its patients, which includes a firm focus on environmental sustainability,” stated John Amiradaki, General Manager, Manufacturing & Supply Chain at Fresenius Australia.

“At Fresenius Medical Care, we understand that manufacturing excellence goes hand in hand with environmental responsibility. That’s why we have embraced the power of renewable energy to drive our operations forward,” he added.

Greg Kozma, General Manager of Australia and New Zealand, Care Enablement, echoed this sentiment. “At Fresenius Medical Care ANZ, we are committed to making a positive impact on the environment while delivering life-changing medical care. By utilising solar power, we reduce our carbon footprint and help take our organisation towards its global climate goals.”

Fresenius, a competitor to Baxter Healthcare, provides services for 3.8 million dialysis patients worldwide. Through its expansive network of 4,153 dialysis clinics – 23 locally – the company extends vital treatments to approximately 345,000 patients.
