Departing J&J MedTech MD reflects on 23-year tenure and passion for innovation

Sue Martin, Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson MedTech Australia & New Zealand, will be stepping down after more than two decades with the company. Her departure will mark the end of a distinguished 23-year career at Johnson & Johnson, with the last seven years spent leading J&J MedTech in Australia and New Zealand.
“It is with some trepidation but excitement and optimism that, after 23 years at Johnson & Johnson including the past seven years as Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson MedTech ANZ, I will bid a very fond farewell at the end of October,” Martin stated.
Reflecting on her tenure, Martin expressed gratitude for the diverse experiences and opportunities she encountered.
“I have so many reasons to be grateful for my time at J&J including the various opportunities afforded me, the rich and diverse experiences, the exposures to multiple markets and cultures & most importantly the amazingly talented people I got to work alongside,” she said.
“There are so many to thank, however I would like to acknowledge Gavin Fox-Smith, Vladimir Makatsaria, Tim Schmid and now Vishnu Kalra for their faith in me and support over the years.”
Throughout her career, Martin led numerous teams and businesses across various markets, but she emphasised that her work in Australia and New Zealand had a lasting impact.
“ANZ is where I truly got to make a mark on our industry, patients, and clinicians, and to play such a central role in partnering with our customers and government to build and preserve Australia and New Zealand’s world-class healthcare systems,” she said.
Her passion for driving meaningful change led to Martin being named the winner of the Health Industry Hub Catalysts for Change Awards in the Outstanding Policy Conversations category.
Martin’s contributions extend beyond Johnson & Johnson, including a notable six-year tenure on the Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA) Board, where she served as Vice-Chair and Chair during the challenging COVID-19 period.
Reflecting on her journey from her early career as a nurse to her leadership at J&J MedTech, Martin emphasised her unwavering commitment to improving patient outcomes through innovation.
“I have and will remain passionate about the impact we can bring to patients through science and innovation, and I’m excited for the next chapter,” she said.
As Martin prepares for her next steps, she leaves behind a legacy of leadership, resilience, and dedication to advancing healthcare in Australia and New Zealand.
