Bayer reshapes medical imaging, setting a new standard for precision healthcare

MedTech & Diagnostics News: In a ground-breaking development set to reshape the landscape of medical imaging, Bayer unveiled its revolutionary AI platform, Calantic Digital Solutions. Described as a ‘second pair of eyes’ for radiologists, this cutting-edge cloud-hosted platform promises to accelerate diagnoses and dramatically improve detection, ushering in a new era of medical precision and efficiency.
With a burgeoning elderly population and changing lifestyles leading to a surge in chronic diseases, the demand for timely and accurate healthcare has never been greater. Recognising this pressing need, Professor Paul Parizel, a distinguished radiologist at Royal Perth Hospital and the inaugural David Hartley Chair of Radiology at the University of Western Australia, expressed his enthusiasm for the launch of Calantic Digital Solutions. He stressed its potential to revolutionise medical imaging and alleviate the immense workload burden faced by radiologists worldwide.
The recent revelation of a staggering 50,000 imaging backlogs at both Concord Hospital and Gold Coast University Hospital has thrust the daunting challenges faced by radiologists into the spotlight. With the ever-expanding responsibilities in medical imaging and mounting after-hours demands, nearly half of all radiologists are experiencing burnout. Compounding the issue further, Australia is grappling with a severe shortage of radiologists, prompting an urgent call for innovative solutions to alleviate this strain on the healthcare system.
Enter Calantic Digital Solutions, a game-changing platform specifically designed with radiologists, for radiologists. Powered by AI, this innovative technology offers scalable access to tools and applications that streamline workflow prioritisation, detection, and quantification, effectively reducing the manual workload and saving precious time. This means radiologists can focus on what truly matters: providing accurate diagnoses and improving patient outcomes.
“AI-enabled radiology that effectively combines human and artificial intelligence is a promising and
exciting opportunity for the delivery of better healthcare. AI opens new horizons and will support
radiologists to handle the growing amounts of data, with value-adding and quantitative insights.
This ultimately leads to accelerated and improved diagnosis, and better health outcomes for
patients,” Professor Parizel said.
Bayer, with its rich heritage in therapeutic and diagnostic innovations, is driving this medical imaging revolution by leveraging its extensive medical expertise across various diseases. Initially focusing on thoracic and neurological diseases in X-Ray, CT, and MRI, the platform is set to expand its scope to include breast and cardiovascular diseases following regulatory approval.
Michael Grimm, Country Group Head of Radiology at Bayer in ANZ and South Asia, expressed his pride in supporting healthcare professionals in their critical decision-making processes.
“We are incredibly proud of our investment in research and development, manufacturing operations, and local innovations in Sydney’s innovation hub. With a team of over 100 skilled staff and engineers, we continue to drive the future of radiology, not just in Australia but globally.
“This launch of Calantic Digital Solutions represents a major step forward for Bayer, from being a product provider to a solution provider. We remain invested in local research and development in medical imaging as we continue to focus on delivering state-of-the art disease-oriented solutions for radiologists and for the benefit of Australian patients,” he commented.
At the core of Calantic Digital Solutions’ innovation lies its ability to orchestrate various fragmented applications into a unified, user-friendly interface. By automating time-consuming tasks and facilitating access to all installed AI applications through one common interface, radiologists can streamline their workflow and focus on delivering exceptional care. For example, AI flags potential findings, automates tedious tasks such as lesion measurements, and helps triage patients who need urgent diagnosis and treatment by detecting and communicating suspected positive findings.
Macquarie Medical Imaging at Macquarie University Hospital in New South Wales is currently trialling Calantic Digital Solutions, following its successful launch in the US, parts of Europe, and Japan. As this revolutionary AI platform continues to gain traction, the future of medical imaging and patient care looks brighter than ever before, with Calantic Digital Solutions poised to transform the way diagnoses are made, benefiting patients and healthcare professionals alike.
