Australia hosts world-first installation of point-of-care capital equipment
MedTech & Diagnostics News: Gosford Private Hospital has unveiled an advancement in medical technology that promises to reshape the landscape of surgical procedures and patient care. The hospital, operated by Healthe Care, has ushered in a new era of innovation with the introduction of the BodyTom 64 point-of-care computed tomography (CT) scanner.
The world’s first portable CT scanner has been developed by Samsung Electronics subsidiary NeuroLogica and is distributed by Life Healthcare in Australia. The BodyTom 64, approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in June 2022, is a multi-departmental imaging solution that can be used for neurosurgery/surgery, trauma/ER, and interventional radiology. The combination of rapid scan time, flexible settings, and immediate image viewing makes the BodyTom a valuable tool to any facility needing versatile real-time portable imaging for personalised patient care.
Michael Mitchell, CEO of Gosford Private Hospital, enthusiastically welcomed the hospital’s latest advancement.
“We are very pleased to upgrade the BodyTom to the latest version [from the previous BodyTom Elite CT scanner]. Gosford Private Hospital can continue to provide the best possible care to the residents of the Central Coast and beyond,” he said.
This world-first installation is revolutionising the way neurosurgery is performed, under the expertise of renowned local neurosurgeon, Dr Marc Coughlan.
“We are very fortunate to have a dedicated team of intraoperative radiographers that were familiar with the workflow of the previous BodyTom [BodyTom Elite] and were able to take the next step with enhanced clarity and accuracy in a world first new 64 slice CT,” he remarked.
While Samsung competes alongside Philips Healthcare, GE Healthcare, and Siemens Healthcare in the field of imaging technology, the implications of this cutting-edge extends far beyond the confines of the operating room. Patients undergoing procedures at the hospital stand to gain significantly from expedited recovery periods and enhanced post-operative outcomes. This advancement eliminates the necessity for patients to seek treatment outside the Central Coast, further solidifying Gosford Private Hospital as a centre of medical excellence.
Mr Mitchell echoed Dr Coughlan’s sentiments, emphasising the hospital’s role as an incubator of progressive healthcare solutions.
“At Gosford Private Hospital, we aim to drive innovation in healthcare and deliver cutting-edge solutions that empower our local healthcare professionals. Providing world class facilities and care with some of Australia’s best surgeons,” said Mr Mitchell.
