AI integration in insertable cardiac monitors to save clinics 180+ hours

MedTech & Diagnostics News: Medtronic has leveraged the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance its Reveal Linq insertable cardiac monitor (ICM) devices with a cloud-based update. This upgrade has been implemented across Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
The newly integrated AccuRhythm AI deploys deep learning algorithms seamlessly integrated into the CareLink network, effectively eliminating false atrial fibrillation (AF) and pause episodes.
The platform utilises a vast database comprising over 1 million electrocardiogram heart rhythm episodes. Notably, these enhancements are automatically applied in the cloud, requiring no action from patients.
Projections from Medtronic indicate that the incorporation of these AI algorithms will yield an 85% reduction in false AF and pause alerts. Furthermore, the company anticipates maintaining a high level of accuracy, with true alerts preserved at rates of 98.2% for AF and 99.9% for pause incidents.
As a result, clinics stand to benefit significantly, saving over 186 hours annually in false alert review for every 200 Reveal Linq patients. This efficiency grants clinicians additional time to dedicate to critical patient care activities.
Stacey Churchwell, Vice President and General Manager of Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Services at Medtronic, reflected on this milestone, stating, “This milestone is both a nod to the past as we celebrate the thousands of patients who have benefited from Reveal LINQ over the last decade, and a glimpse into the future as an example of how AI can effectively update an established technology overnight.”
