Abbott showcases leadless pacemaker system to local stakeholders

Health Industry Hub | October 8, 2024 |

MedTech & Diagnostics News: Leadless pacemakers are promising alternatives to transvenous pacing. Abbott hosted a stakeholder event at the recent Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS) conference in Sydney, spotlighting the advancement of its leadless pacemaker system.

The event highlighted the Aveir VR leadless pacemaker system, the first of its kind in the world, designed to treat patients with abnormal or slow heart rhythms. This innovative technology facilitates wireless, beat-to-beat communication between two leadless pacemakers.

Unlike traditional pacemakers, which rely on leads that can cause complications, the AVEIR leadless devices are implanted directly into the heart via a minimally invasive procedure. This method eliminates the risks associated with cardiac leads and infections while offering a shorter and less restrictive recovery period for patients.

Cardiac arrhythmias: A review of current practices and emerging technologies

Abbott faces stiff competition in the arrhythmia market. The Medtronic Micra VR was considered by the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) at the July 2022 meeting and subsequently listed on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) in November 2023.

A recent comparison of procedure-related adverse events between Medtronic Micra VR and Abbott Aveir VR leadless pacemakers showed that “they have similar procedural safety profiles, including the incidences of death and perforation. However, device problems differed significantly, possibly related to their design differences. Compared to Micra VR, Aveir VR appears to have an advantageous threshold measurement capability but is more prone to device dislodgement.”
