A state-of-the-art orthopaedic centre launches in Sydney
MedTech & Diagnostics News: Macquarie University Hospital has officially opened the doors of its new $30 million Orthopaedic Institute, heralding a new era in surgical precision and patient recovery processes. This cutting-edge facility is the result of a pioneering joint venture between Medibank’s Amplar Health, a consortium of leading orthopaedic surgeons, and MQ Health.
Strategically located within Macquarie University Hospital, the Institute occupies a dedicated floor, boasting four state-of-the-art theatres equipped with the latest robotic technology and a 29-bed capacity. This innovative setup is designed to support a model of care that prioritises optimal patient recovery through a combination of pre-assessment, pre-habilitation, and home-based recovery support.
“We are thrilled to partner with Amplar Health and our esteemed group of surgeons to launch this revolutionary facility,” said Walter Kmet, Chief Executive of MQ Health. “Our investment in advanced robotic systems underscores our commitment to excellence in orthopaedic and specialty surgeries, ensuring we meet the growing demand for joint replacements with unmatched precision and care.”
The Orthopaedic Institute is designed to be inclusive, offering its services to all patients, irrespective of their private health insurance status. This approach ensures that more Australians have access to high-quality orthopaedic care with minimal out-of-pocket expenses, thanks to arrangements with participating surgeons.
The facility’s comprehensive service range includes hip and knee replacements, along with upper and lower limb reconstructions, providing patients with various post-operative pathways tailored to their specific needs. The Institute welcomed its first patients on January 29, 2024, and has since been lauded for its innovative approach to healthcare delivery.
At the heart of the Institute’s philosophy is a commitment to enhancing patient recovery and satisfaction by allowing them to recuperate in the comfort of their own homes, with support from visiting health professionals.
“The Orthopaedic Hospital exemplifies the future of healthcare, offering patients more control, choice, and value in their treatment,” said Dr Janette Randall, Chief Medical Officer at Amplar Health, during the opening ceremony.
Dr Randall emphasised the importance of innovation in healthcare, particularly the shift towards personalised care and the rapid adoption of enhanced recovery models.
“This approach not only benefits the patient by reducing hospital stay durations but also plays a crucial role in the sustainability of our healthcare system,” she added.
