Leadership & Management
The fundamentals of good leadership, according to Australian survey

For some, ‘leaders’ are people in a position of authority in business, others consider leaders to be those with strong enough personalities or sufficient personal authority to influence others. But successful leadership involves more than position or strength of character.
According to the AIM (Australian Institute of Management) 2019 Leadership Survey, the three most important leadership skills are:
- Effective communication – Listening with genuine interest allows leaders to gain powerful understanding of the business and its people. It also enhances trust and respect.
- Emotional intelligence (EQ) – EQ underpins a leader’s ability to make objective decisions, even when emotions such as pride and self-esteem are involved.
- People management – Digital technologies have changed the way organisations manage people, and leaders today need the ability to integrate the right people into a business and help existing employees gain new digital competencies to facilitate transformation.
The 2019 AIM Leadership Survey shows that today’s leaders need a broad, well-balanced skillset that enables them to inspire and engage employees in order to achieve their strategic goals.
Employees value authentic and trustworthy leaders
The top three most important personal behaviours of a great leader, as listed by the AIM 2019 Leadership Survey participants, were:
- Authenticity
- Trustworthiness, and
- Inspiring others.
People want to follow real people
According to Megan Motto, Governance Institute of Australia chief executive, “people want to follow real people. There’s a balance to be struck between being a stoic leader, always being in control, and staying true to yourself.”
