Leadership homecoming at Vertex ANZ: New country head returns to chart future growth

Vertex Pharmaceuticals has appointed Elisha Whitfield as Senior Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand, effective 1 December 2025. For Whitfield, the move is both professional and personal – a return to her home country as she takes over from Sabrina Barbic, who led the local business for nearly three years.

“Vertex has an impressive track record of bringing transformative treatments to people living with serious diseases. Here in Australia and New Zealand, the impact Vertex has had in Cystic Fibrosis has been remarkable, and I am really excited to be joining the team as we build on that progress for patients and their families,” Whitfield said. “I love working with engaged high performing teams and tackling challenges together to make a real impact in the communities we serve.”

Whitfield’s career spans almost 20 years across global, regional, and local leadership roles in the pharmaceutical industry. She joins Vertex after nearly five years at Novo Nordisk, where she most recently served as General Manager and Vice President in Norway. Prior to that, she was based in Singapore shaping commercial strategy across Southeast Asia, and earlier led Novo Nordisk’s global Alzheimer’s commercial unit in Denmark. Her career foundations were built at Lundbeck, where she spent close to 13 years in both Australia and Denmark.

With degrees in biochemistry and pharmacology from the University of Sydney, Whitfield brings a blend of scientific expertise and commercial leadership.

Vertex’s reputation has long been anchored in cystic fibrosis, but the company is sharpening its R&D footprint in other rare diseases. Earlier this year, it initiated a phase 2 trial in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom for myotonic dystrophy type I (DM1), an inherited, multisystem disorder characterised by progressive muscle weakness, myotonia, and systemic complications.
