AusBiotech and Medicines Australia IWD luncheon: A collective voice for bold action on gender equity

Health Industry Hub | March 7, 2025 |

AusBiotech and Medicines Australia are joining forces to host the highly anticipated annual Women in Life Sciences luncheon, set to bring together 600 influential leaders from across the sector in Sydney today. This event will celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women in life sciences, while calling for urgent action towards achieving gender equity within the industry.

For almost a decade, AusBiotech and Medicines Australia have led the charge in honouring the women who are transforming the life sciences sector, turning it into a driving force of innovation and significant societal impact, particularly in alignment with International Women’s Day.

This year’s luncheon is poised to offer more than just a celebration. It provides a powerful platform to highlight the vital role women play in Australia’s life sciences landscape, all while acknowledging the pressing need for change when it comes to women in senior leadership positions.

Rebekah Cassidy, CEO of AusBiotech, expressed her enthusiasm for the event, saying, “Not only are we bringing together some of our country’s most influential female life science leaders and celebrating the contributions of women in our sector, but we will also recognise ongoing challenges and have data-led conversations about opportunities to accelerate action.”

The event will feature an impactful panel conversation, focused on the critical issue of equal opportunity at all levels within the industry. As the life sciences sector continues to grow, it’s imperative that gender balance in leadership remains a top priority.

Cassidy added, “The quality of conversation today with our distinguished panel promises to be both insightful and impactful, sparking a deeper, ongoing dialogue on the critical issues shaping the future of the sector and the opportunities for greater gender equity in leadership.”

Elizabeth de Somer, CEO of Medicines Australia, echoed this sentiment, saying, “Medicines Australia is delighted to partner with AusBiotech again to host the Women in Life Sciences luncheon, where we will explore the challenges and opportunities for women in leadership roles, as well learn the importance of mentors and sponsors in accelerating action to close gender gaps across the life sciences sector.

“Women play a crucial role in Australia’s life sciences sector, driving groundbreaking research and innovation, and public healthcare advancements. The diverse perspectives and leadership foster more inclusive discoveries and equitable medical solutions. We must make decisive steps to achieve a more equitable and inclusive working environment.”
