Human Resources

‘Be adaptable, vulnerable and continuously learn’, says Edwards Lifesciences HR Director: International HR Day

Health Industry Hub | May 21, 2024 |

People & Culture: Coinciding with International HR Day, Samantha Alkin, Director Human Resources ANZ, Edwards Lifesciences, joined Health Industry Hub to discuss this year’s theme and “refining the future workplace“.

The pandemic has pushed the boundaries of people leadership, challenging even the most seasoned leaders. Reflecting on significant shifts observed during this time, Alkin stated, “It became so much more of a priority for us and our strategy – to make sure our employees are looking after their minds and their bodies, so that they can not only give their best back to work, but also their families as well.”

“Leading at the Speed of Trust teaches our leaders a lot about what’s important to our employees and how easy it is to build trust, but even how easier it is to lose trust within your teams.”

The evolution of hybrid and flexible workplaces has produced mixed results across the industry, with some companies advocating for return to office policies. Alkin shared her perspective on what “balance” looks like for employees and the overall business.

The first publication of gender pay gaps for nearly 5,000 private sector employers complemented Australia’s first national strategy for gender equality, launched in March. Alkin discussed how the government’s strategy aligns with Edwards’ diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) objectives.

Looking ahead, Alkin reimagined the future of work over the next five years and how it could transform to offer greater value and meaning for employees, leaders, and businesses.

“Learning agility is the way forward. We need to be adaptable, vulnerable and continue to learn so we don’t stand still,” she emphasised.
