Cardinal Health kicks off operations at ‘first’ remanufacturing hub

Cardinal Health has reached a significant milestone in its single-use medical device remanufacturing operations in Beresfield, Newcastle, marking progress since the project was announced last year. The site is the company’s first facility outside the United States, bringing its circular economy model into action in the Australian market.

The company has successfully completed construction for the new manufacturing site in Newcastle. The facility will initially specialise in devices such as compression sleeves used in post-surgical care and the prevention of deep vein thrombosis. It will apply the same process Cardinal Health has successfully operated in the United States since 2015, returning devices to circulation after comprehensive quality testing and high-level disinfection.

“We’ve reached an exciting milestone in our sustainability journey in Australia, with initial operations commencing at Cardinal Health’s new Newcastle processing site,” Neroli Manning, Managing Director of Cardinal Health ANZ told Health Industry Hub. “We are beginning to process the first batch of used Sequential Compression Device (SCD) sleeves that were collected from hospitals across the country.”

With construction complete, Cardinal Health is shifting focus to the next critical stage, building out its workforce in the Hunter region. The company is set to recruit and train specialised operations technicians who will underpin the facility’s remanufacturing efforts, taking responsibility for the safe handling, sorting and processing of used SCD sleeves, while supporting the site’s sustained efficiency and performance over time.

At the same time, Cardinal Health is scaling its nationwide collection program for single-use medical devices. Expanding this network is critical to maintaining a reliable pipeline of materials for remanufacturing, while tackling the environmental sustainability challenges driven by the healthcare sector’s waste footprint.
