Digital twins and AI patient selection reshape clinical trials ecosystem

Health Industry Hub | May 22, 2026 |

Marking Clinical Trials Day (20 May), Maddy Brocklehurst, Head of Clinical Studies Unit at Sanofi ANZ, joins this Health Industry Hub podcast series to explore what it means to operate within a clinical trials environment that is no longer defined only by scientific rigor.

Within that context, national reform efforts such as the National One Stop Shop (NOSS) and the National Clinical Trials Front Door become more than administrative initiatives. They sit at the centre of a broader question about coordination, accessibility, and whether system simplification can keep pace with stakeholder expectations.

Attention also turns to the design of trials themselves, particularly the growing expectation that clinical research must better reflect the populations it serves. The conversation examines the persistent underrepresentation of certain groups, including women, and the ongoing challenge of moving diversity from aspiration to embedded standard.

Sanofi is actively tackling these inclusion barriers through a set of initiatives, including community outreach roles, inclusive trial design, continuous patient input throughout the trial lifecycle, and formal diversity metrics aligned to real-world disease burden.

Looking ahead, the conversation turns to the key trends expected to reshape clinical trials. One of the more provocative possibilities raised is whether emerging approaches could eventually challenge long-standing design conventions such as the placebo arm.
