‘Where you live shouldn’t dictate if you live’, affirms CEO of largest private cancer care provider, Icon Group

MedTech & Diagnostics News: In a recent interview with Health Industry Hub, Mark Middleton, CEO of Icon Group, shared insights into the company’s unique approach to cancer care, emphasising an integrated care model that seeks to simplify the cancer journey for patients. Mr Middleton highlighted the importance of collaboration, equitable access, technological advancements, and Icon Group’s global expansion.

Regarding the challenges in the healthcare sector, Middleton acknowledged the issues of wait times, lack of access, and workforce shortages. He emphasised the need for collaboration between the public and private sectors to overcome these challenges.

Mr Middleton noted, “The public system can’t deliver everything by themselves, and the private system can’t do that either. There needs to be collaboration; there needs to be partnership.”

Highlighting the underutilisation of radiation therapy, Mr Middleton stressed its effectiveness in cancer treatment. He mentioned that one in two cancer patients would benefit from radiation oncology. However, there remains a lack of access. He emphasised the need for more efforts to make radiation therapy accessible, as it is both life-saving and cost-effective compared to other therapies.

In discussing Icon Group’s global expansion, Mr Middleton discussed the recently announced partnership with Nuffield Health in the United Kingdom. He highlighted the challenges faced by the UK’s overwhelmed healthcare system and expressed Icon Group’s willingness to collaborate to address these issues. He also delved into the acceleration of technological advancements and its significant impact on patient care and health professional training.

Addressing the organisation’s role in policy and advocacy, Mr Middleton stressed Icon Group’s responsibility as leaders in oncology when actively engaging with government to advocate for sustainable oncology platforms and equitable access to care.
