Urologist welcomes da Vinci Xi surgical system

Health Industry Hub | March 8, 2021 |

MedTech News: Knox Private Hospital in Victoria is now offering surgeons and patients access to Intuitive’s da Vinci Xi Surgical System and Trumpf operating table.

The advancements in this technology are focused on best outcomes for patients allowing for more complex procedures to be performed.

A/Professor Damien Bolton, a highly revered and skilled Urologist performed the first case using the Da Vinci Xi robot at Knox Private Hospital, a Healthscope private hospital.

The surgical system has integrated table motion which means the ‘robot speaks to the operating table’ during surgery and the patient can be dynamically positioned and repositioned while the surgeon operates. The ability to reposition the operating table allows for the best exposure and access to the anatomy targeted.

A/Professor Bolton said “I did my first, 100th and my 1000th robot case at Knox, but the first operation with this new model Da Vinci Xi robot is the most memorable.

“As good as the best surgical robot you could find anywhere in the world. The optics of the new generation Endoscope plus system offers a level of precision in surgery that was unimaginable only years ago.

“The additional technical features of this surgical robot offer potential for minimally invasive surgery in areas beyond prostate and kidney cancer, including bowel and gynaecological cancers,” he added.

In a recently published study comparing the accuracy of the da Vinci Xi and da Vinci Si for image guidance and automation, the authors concluded “The Xi can achieve sub-millimetric average error. Calibration improves accuracy, but excellent baseline accuracy of the Xi means that calibration may not be needed for some applications. Importantly, the external tracking systems needed to account for setup joint error in the Si are no longer required with the Xi.”
