MTAA CEO sets out medtech sector priorities ahead of election

As unofficial election campaigning gains momentum, Ian Burgess, CEO of the Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA), weighs in on the complex challenges facing the healthcare system and reveals the three key priorities for the medtech sector.
Speaking as part of a pre-election Health Industry Hub interview series, Burgess commented on recent data indicating that access to “quality, affordable” healthcare ranks as the second most pressing concern for Australians. He delved into whether this priority aligns with the Labor government’s current agenda or if there is a potential disconnect.
Turning to policy gaps and regulatory challenges, Burgess pinpointed major impediments to accessing essential medical technologies. These barriers, he argued, directly hinder the delivery of optimal patient care and “threaten the value of private health insurance”.
Reflecting on recent health reforms under the Labor government, Burgess provided a mixed view, acknowledging examples of reforms that course-corrected “to avoid a bad direction that reforms were headed,” while noting others that have missed the mark.
On the broader issue of rising healthcare expenditure and a Federal budget projected to remain in deficit for the next decade, Burgess addressed the critical question of whether increased investment in innovative medical technologies are delivering proportional gains in health outcomes and productivity.
Looking ahead to the election, Burgess outlined MTAA’s priorities, with three key areas of focus including the Prescribed List (PL), digital health, and a service charter for the Department of Health.
