Medtech pitch winner flags funding gaps behind ‘valleys of death’

Medtech innovation rarely moves in a straight line. It advances in bursts through funding windows, regulatory thresholds, and the long road from bench to bedside. That tension sits at the centre of this podcast conversation with Elleesha King, Founder and CEO of Pulsatile Innovations, and Teneille Murray, Innovation & Growth Lead at Medical Technology Association of Australia (MTAA).
MTAA’s increasing focus on start-ups reflects a broader recalibration in how the sector thinks about innovation. As Murray describes it, initiatives like the MedTech Ignite Innovation Pitch Challenge are about creating structured points of contact between homegrown innovators and a funding ecosystem that is complex to navigate.
For King, emerging as the winner of that pitch challenge carries a significance that sits beyond recognition. It is not a simplification of the journey ahead, but a reflection of the persistence and grit required to keep pushing through it. Medtech translation, she suggests, is shaped by a mismatch between the speed of scientific development and the pace at which funding, evidence generation, and clinical adoption align.
The discussion inevitably turns to the “valleys of death” that define the space between homegrown research and real-world adoption. Murray frames this as a system challenge as much as a funding issue, where state and federal governments along with investors play a determining role in whether medtech innovation remains in pilot mode or progresses into patient care.
What emerges is not a linear story of progress, but a clearer view of the structural conditions shaping it: a system where innovation is constant, but translation is conditional, and where the distance between idea and impact is still being negotiated.
