Changing minds: Should insurers step up in mental health or stick to their lane?

Australia’s mental health system is at a crossroads. Vision 2030 sets out an ambitious promise: universal access to affordable, evidence-based mental healthcare, regardless of income, postcode, or cultural background. But as the sector grapples with crippling workforce shortages and growing demand, that promise risks becoming little more than a slogan.

In a timely conversation with Linda Opie, Head of Health and Wellbeing at HCF, and Sha Nyanu, Psychologist at Ginibi Psychology, the question wasn’t just whether the current system is fit for purpose – it was whether traditional players can deliver on reform alone.

The recent mass resignation of psychiatrists in NSW has only intensified the urgency. With the federal government pledging to roll out a National Early Intervention Service (NEIS) from January 2026, should it be re-elected, the spotlight is now on how private health insurers will fit into the bigger picture.

For HCF, the nation’s largest not-for-profit health insurer, the response has already begun. The insurer is expanding its mental health offerings and building partnerships aimed at increasing access to care.

Still, not everyone is on board. Some clinicians and professional groups remain wary of private health insurers playing a role in care delivery, citing concerns over clinical independence and commercial interests.

As pressure mounts and the existing system continues to struggle, is it still justifiable to cling to rigid boundaries over real-world solutions?
